The U.S. government is trying to decide whether or not to send Freddie Mac and Fannie May into conservatorship--fancy government talk for a taxpayer-funded bailout. And if that weren't enough in itself, consider that "together the two companies touch more than half of the nation's $12 trillion in mortgages by either owning them or backing them." $12 TRILLION. That's more than double the total national debt at the time this is being written.
